Rock"n"roll awards shows are well well known for most things: drinking, irreverence and wandering drum players queasiness over their own boots to name only three. But until right away they haven"t primarily been well well known for unpretentious games of 80s TV ask show Catchphrase.

That all altered at the NME awards tonight when host Jarvis Cocker motionless to open the rite with his own DIY version of the game, set up utilizing Photoshop and a laptop. The throng at Brixton Academy competence have been a bit confused but that didn"t stop them personification along, generally as Jarvis gave record a rock"n"roll spin. A design of Paul McCartney and a little bees? That"ll be the Maccabees! An arctic theatre and a little monkeys? Well, you get the picture.

The former Pulp thespian positively brought a little shambolic appeal to record (not to discuss credibility, one past host in new years was Vernon Kay!). Still, nobody"s sanctimonious the NME awards still paint an anti-awards eventuality these days. You could have outlayed the night on vacation each hair reception room in Britain and you still wouldn"t listen to Shockwaves referred to as often.

Anyway, on to the awards. Whereas 2009 was all about the old guard, with a Blur reunion on theatre and Oasis winning most appropriate British band, this year it was the Gallagher brothers" proteges who prisoner the limelight.

Kasabian and Muse were the dual big winners, with the Devon sci-fi rockers triumphing in the most appropriate British rope category, after a year that saw them tip the charts in nineteen countries with their manuscript The Resistance – they additionally took the most appropriate website prize. However, the most appropriate manuscript prize, and that for most appropriate manuscript artwork, went to Kasabian for their third LP, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, that was additionally a UK No 1.

Before pciking up their esteem Kasabian had achieved with Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding, the initial of multiform collaborations on the night. Lily Allen teamed up with the Big Pink to sing their lane Dominos, whilst Biffy Clyro were assimilated by the hotly sloping Marina and the Diamonds, whose entrance manuscript The Family Jewels is set to draft rarely on Sunday. Other performances of note enclosed a integrate of tunes from the Specials, who were celebrated for their superb grant to music, and the lapse of Courtney Love and Hole.

Of course, no awards rite in 2010 would be finish but a lurch of Lady Gaga. The cocktail prodigy managed the weird feat of winning the awards for best-dressed and worst-dressed cocktail star for outfits that enclosed red PVC dresses and panoply done wholly out of Kermit the Frog dolls. It seems such clothes is still an acquired ambience for the magazine"s readers.

Other awards went to La Roux"s In for the Kill (Skream remix) for most appropriate dancefloor filler and Paramore for most appropriate general rope whilst Blur won most appropriate live eventuality for their Hyde Park show. Arctic Monkeys were declared most appropriate live action and Lily Allen became the initial leader of the giving it behind endowment after entertainment value hunts for propitious fans to find free tickets to her universe tour.

Bombay Bicycle Club were declared most appropriate new band, Glastonbury perceived the most appropriate legal holiday drum and the Specials picked up the superb grant endowment prior to behaving Too Much Too Young and Gangsters.

Rage Against The Machine, who kept X Factor leader Joe McElderry off the Yuletide No 1 spot, were hailed heroes of the year, whilst Kanye West was declared knave of the year.

The Jonas brothers perceived a stand in whammy by being declared misfortune rope and carrying the misfortune album, according to voters.

Paul Weller sealed the dusk with a greatest-hits set after picking up the divine might award, presented to him by Bobby Gillespie and Mick Jones.

And if this all seemed a bit too, well, mainstream at slightest an additional old idol was on palm to shake up things up a little more. Shane McGowan"s gift strain for Haiti was since an disdainful premiere, call half the throng to spin turn to the chairman subsequent to them and complete the imperishable words: "Did he only contend Shane McGowan"s gift singular for Haiti?!?"
